Shew! This week’s mug rug design was a bit more intricate than I anticipated when I first created it, which is why I am a little bit late in getting it out to you. However, it is definitely worth the wait!
The inspiration behind this week’s design has a special meaning to me (and I hope maybe it will for you too!). Recently, I was hanging out with some of my best, mom friends and we started talking about how each day you have to “choose joy”. At the stage that we are in our lives, with small children, it can be so easy to get weighed down by the demands of everyday life. But when we stop and decide to choose joy, whether it’s for that particular day, that particular hour, or even that particular moment, it can be so refreshing! So I created this design to be a reminder that, not only during this holiday season but every day, we should choose joy. (Even if it’s only to be joyful that everyone made it through the day, am I right?!)
Okay. I’m going to step down off of my philosophical (hopefully inspirational) pedestal and get to the pattern. I know that’s why you’re really here!

Medium #4 Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn
(I used Peaches and Cream )
4 ¼ “ square
*Measurement does not include fringe*
18 sc and 16 rows = 4in.
sc – single crochet
ch – chain
st – stitch
(RS) – right side
(WS) – wrong side
This pattern is written in US terms.
Starting chain does not count as a stitch
After completing the first row, I like to mark the right side with a stitch marker (or a safety pin). This helped me to easily keep track of which side was which as I was working through the pattern.
When changing colors, keep the loose ends and dropped strands to the wrong side of your mug rug, it will help keep the right side nice and neat. (This is where the stitch marker was helpful!)
This week I tried a different technique. I stitched the entire mug rug in my background color and then cross-stitched the “JOY” design onto it. It made the letters more crisp, but I still kind of like the funky design that comes from stitching the letters right into the mug rug.
Mug Rug Instructions:
Row 1: (RS) Sc in 2nd ch from the hook. Sc in each st across. (15 st)
Row 2-17: Ch 1, sc in each st across changing colors as needed to follow the design.
Finish off and sew in ends.
Adding the Fringe (Optional):
Cut 36 (4-5 inch) strands of yarn
Use 2 strands of yarn for each fringe. There will be a total of 9 fringes on each side.
To add the fringe— insert hook from the back to the front.
Wrap the two strands around the hook and pull through.
Pull ends through the loop and pull tight.
Once you’ve added the entire fringe, trim to your desired length. (I trimmed mine to about 1”)
Check out last week’s mug rug design post for a helpful tip for making the fringe.
